He loved to show the beauty in the streets of Paris. His work often featured children playing freely in the city. He also enjoyed using irony in his pictures. This meant he liked to show unexpected things happening together. He would photograph different social classes or funny characters in cafes. These images helped people see the magic in normal life.

Doisneau learned many skills before he became a full-time photographer. He studied at the École Estienne and graduated in 1929. He earned diplomas in engraving and lithography, which is a way of printing. He also took classes in drawing people and still life. When he was only 16, he started taking photos as a hobby. At first, he just photographed simple things like cobblestones. Later, he moved on to photographing children and adults. By the end of the 1920s, he worked as a lettering artist at a studio. He eventually became a staff photographer there.

His career changed many times during the middle of the century. In 1931, he began working as an assistant to André Vigneau. By 1935, he was taking industrial photos for the Renault car factory. He later worked as a freelancer in advertising and postcard photography. During World War II, he served in the French army as a soldier and a photographer. From 1940 to 1945, he used his art skills for the French Resistance. He used his talent for engraving to make fake passports and papers. This helped people stay safe during the war years.

After the war, Doisneau became an international star. He sold his photos to famous magazines like Life. In 1950, he took his most famous picture, "Le baiser de l'hôtel de ville." This photo, known as "The Kiss," shows a couple kissing on a busy street.

Doisneau was a humble man who lived in southern Paris. In 1984, the French president François Mitterrand named him a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. This is a very high honor in France. He died in 1994, six months after his wife Pierrette passed away. Today, his legacy lives on through his two daughters. They manage his archives and his many works. Many places in France honor him today. There are primary schools and even a gallery in Gentilly named after him.
