He is known as a very important figure in American art. Many people love his work because it feels true to nature. He captured the world with great skill and feeling. He was famous for painting the sea and its powerful waves. His art shows both quiet moments and exciting scenes. People still study his paintings to understand the 19th century.

To make his art, Homer used different tools. He began as a commercial illustrator making drawings for magazines. He used wood engravings to show scenes of city and country life. Later, he used oil paints to create thick and heavy works.

He also used watercolors, which are paints that flow easily on paper. He used these to record his many working vacations. This allowed him to show light and movement in a fluid way.

Homer was mostly self-taught in his art. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on February 24, 1836. His mother was a talented watercolorist and his first teacher.

At age 19, he started an apprenticeship in lithography. This was a job where he drew repetitive covers for sheet music. By 1857, he was working as a freelance illustrator. He eventually moved to New York City in 1859 to open a studio.

Many important events shaped his career. During the American Civil War, he sketched life in military camps.

He painted works like "Home, Sweet Home" in 1863. This painting helped him become a full member of the National Academy of Design. In 1867, he traveled to Paris, France, to practice landscape painting. He also painted scenes of life in Virginia, such as "A Visit from the Old Mistress" in 1876.

Homer's art connects to how we see the world today. He focused on real life instead of making things look perfect. He wanted to use a "language of his own" to show truth. His paintings of children and farm life show a sense of nostalgia.
