He was also a soldier who saw many wars. His art was very realistic, which means it looked like real life. He used his paintings to show the truth about fighting. Vereshchagin wanted to promote peace by showing the hard parts of war. Because his work was so honest, some people found it difficult to look at. Many of his scenes were never even shown to the public.

Vereshchagin worked in many different ways to create his art. He studied drawing in earnest after leaving the naval service. He even studied under a master named Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris. He traveled to far places to see things with his own eyes. He visited Central Asia, the Himalayas, and British India. He painted scenes from his travels and from history. One of his paintings was an enormous oil painting of a parade.

It is believed to be the second-largest oil painting in the world.

His life began in 1842 in Cherepovets, Russia. He was the middle of three brothers. His father was a noble landowner. His mother had Tatar roots. When he was young, he went to special schools for cadets. He joined the Naval Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg. He even went on a voyage to Denmark, France, and Egypt. In 1863, he won a medal for a painting called Ulysses Slaying the Suitors. He later lived in many places like Munich and Paris.

Vereshchagin’s paintings often caused big arguments. In 1874, some of his works were not allowed to be shown in St. Petersburg. People thought his paintings made the Russian military look bad. He also painted scenes about the Indian Revolt. Some people in Britain and America argued about what his art showed. He even painted scenes from the New Testament. His style was so real that people thought it was unseemly.

He used this realism to record what he saw.

In his final years, Vereshchagin was back in active service. He was present during the Russo-Turkish War in 1877. Later, he traveled to the Far East during other wars. In 1904, he joined Admiral Makarov on a battleship. While returning to Port Arthur, the ship hit two mines and sank. Vereshchagin died in the shipwreck on April 13, 1904. His last painting was found almost undamaged after the ship went down. Today, a small planet and a town are named after him.
