He was born in 1904 in the upper Volga region. His family lived in a town called Vasilyevo. His father worked at a shipyard on the River Volga. Valery worked as an apprentice at that shipyard too. He even worked as a stoker on a river dredger. A stoker is someone who works with the engine. He later joined the air force as a mechanic. He trained as a pilot and graduated in 1924.

As a test pilot, Valery performed many amazing feats. He led the stunt section of the Soviet air force. He once did 250 loop-the-loops in only 45 minutes. In 1936, he was named a Hero of the Soviet Union.

One of his biggest trips happened in June 1937. He flew a Tupolev ANT-25 airplane from Moscow to the United States. He traveled over the North Pole to get there. This flight helped create a new path for flying over the pole. It was a non-stop trip from Europe to the American Pacific Coast.

Valery died while he was testing a new airplane. He was flying a prototype of the Polikarpov I-180 fighter. This was the very first flight for this plane. The flight did not go as planned. Chkalov flew higher than the flight plan allowed him to go. He climbed to over 2,000 meters. The plan said he should stay below 600 meters. During his second circuit, the engine cut out. He struck a powerline and died two hours later. This happened on 15 December 1938.

Many people have different ideas about why the plane crashed. One official study said the engine stopped because it was too cold. This happened because the cowl flaps were not used. Other people thought he moved the throttle too fast. This might have flooded the engine with fuel. A pilot named Mikhail Gromov blamed the engine design. He also said Chkalov did not follow the flight plan. His son even thought there might have been a plan to harm him. However, the facts of the crash make that unlikely.

Many places around the world remember Valery Chkalov today. The town where he was born is now called Chkalovsk. There are Chkalovskaya metro stations in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. A large monument stands in Nizhny Novgorod.

In the United States, there is a monument in Vancouver, Washington. A street there is even named Chkalov Drive. In Moldova, there is a very short street named after him. It is only 41 meters long. These names show how much people remember his flying.
