Andrei Nikolayevich Tupolev was a famous engineer who changed how people fly. He spent over 50 years designing many different types of aircraft in the Soviet Union. His work included both military planes and civilian airliners for travelers. Tupolev led a large group of designers known as a design bureau. This team created more than 100 different kinds of planes. Some of these amazing machines even set 78 world records.

Learning how to build planes started with studying aerodynamics. Aerodynamics is the study of how air moves around objects. Tupolev studied this under a pioneer named Nikolay Zhukovsky. In 1910, he and his friends even built a small glider. Later, he used metal to build strong aircraft frames. This was a new way of working compared to older wooden planes. He often worked very fast to get a new design into the air. Once a plane was flying, he would slowly make it better over time.

His life was not always easy because of hard times in history. In 1937, Tupolev was arrested on false charges. He was sent to a special prison for designers called a sharashka. Even while he was locked away, he continued his important work. He designed the Tu-2 plane while he was in prison. This plane became a very important tool during World War II. He was finally released in 1941 to help with defense work. He was not fully cleared of the old charges until 1955.

After the war, Tupolev worked on very large and complex projects. He helped create the Tu-4 by studying an American Boeing B-29 bomber. This was a hard job because he had to use different measurements and metals. He also designed the Tu-95, which is a large plane with special engines. Another famous design was the Tu-104, a jet airliner for passengers. His son, Aleksey, also became a great designer. Aleksey helped build the Buran space shuttle.

Today, many people remember Tupolev for his great inventions. One large airport in Moscow is named Vnukovo Andrei Tupolev International Airport. A bronze statue of him stands in Moscow near his old office. People have also put his face on postage stamps. Many streets in different countries are named after him too. His work helped connect the world through flight. We can still see his influence in the planes that fly today.
