He is best known for creating the AK-47 assault rifle. This weapon is used by many people around the world. He also designed other tools like the AKM and AK-74 rifles. His work began because he heard a problem while in a hospital. During a war in 1941, he was wounded in combat. While he recovered, he heard soldiers complaining about their rifles. Their guns often jammed or stopped working correctly. Mikhail wanted to fix this hard job for them. He started designing a new type of rifle that would not get stuck. He used his mechanical skills to make a design that was rugged. This means it could work well in many different places and conditions.

Kalashnikov's journey started in a small village called Kurya. He was the seventeenth child in a very large family of 19 children. His parents were peasants who lived a simple life. In 1930, his family had to move to a new place called Tomsk Oblast. As a teenager, Mikhail used his father's rifle for hunting. This experience helped him learn about how weapons work. Later, he worked at a tractor station to learn more about mechanics. He eventually moved to a weapons design bureau to test rifle parts.

In 1944, he designed a special carbine for the military. This led him to enter a big competition for assault rifles in 1946. He used the nickname "Mikhtim" during this time. His winning design became the AK-47 in 1947. By 1949, the Soviet Army made it their standard rifle. He worked with helpers like Alexandr Zaitsev and Vladimir Deikin. Over his long life, he designed about 150 different models of small weapons. By the year 2009, about 100 million AK-47 rifles had been made.

Kalashnikov's inventions are linked to many parts of history. He was a tank commander before he became a famous designer. He lived a long life and died in 2013 at age 94. He felt two different ways about his work. He was proud that his inventions were so reliable. However, he also felt spiritual pain about the deaths caused by his guns. He wrote a letter to a church leader about these feelings. He was a man who loved his country very much.
