Mathematics is often about finding order in a messy world. Some people use it to study shapes or numbers. Others use it to understand chance and luck. This is called probability theory. It helps us guess how likely an event is to happen. Andrey Kolmogorov was a famous mathematician who changed this field forever.

He helped create the modern rules for probability. Without these rules, it would be harder to study random things. He wanted to make math a solid foundation for everyone.

Kolmogorov's work followed a very careful path. He started by looking at how numbers follow certain patterns. When he was six, he noticed something special about odd numbers. Later, he worked on how to describe random processes. A random process is something that changes in ways we cannot perfectly predict. He and Sydney Chapman even created the Chapman–Kolmogorov equations together.

These equations help scientists understand how things move and change over time. He also helped explain how air moves in a messy way called turbulence.

His life began in 1903 in a place called Tambov. This was a town southeast of Moscow. He was raised by his aunts in a village near Yaroslavl. As a young boy, he was already very smart. He even edited the math section of a school journal at age five. In 1910, he moved to Moscow to live with his aunt. He later studied at Moscow State University. He was a very curious student who read many big books to learn more.

Kolmogorov became a world leader in math during the 1930s. In 1931, he became a professor at Moscow State University. He published a very important book in 1933 called Foundations of the Theory of Probability. This book set the main rules for the field. During World War II, he used his math skills to help his country. He worked on ways to protect Moscow from bombers. He even used math to study how artillery fire works. In 1939, he became a full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

Today, we see his name in many different places. Many math rules and ideas carry the name Kolmogorov. This includes things like Kolmogorov complexity and the Kolmogorov–Arnold–Moser theorem. His ideas help people study everything from ecology to the ocean. He even went on an ocean research trip in 1971. He loved teaching both adults and gifted children. He lived a long and busy life until he died in 1987. His work still helps us understand the world around us.
