He was born in Saint-Affrique in 1871. He grew up as the son of a Protestant pastor. Borel was a star student in his school years. He studied at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand. In 1889, he won a big national math contest called the concours général. He also went to the École normale supérieure. He finished his studies with very high marks in 1892. He was a man who loved solving hard puzzles.

Borel did amazing work with the math of chance. This is called probability theory. He helped start a field called measure theory. This field helps us measure different groups of things. Because of his great ideas, people use the name "Borel set" today. He also thought about how numbers act when picked randomly. In 1909, he showed that most random numbers follow a certain pattern. He even wrote about games of strategy between 1921 and 1927. One of his ideas became a famous thought experiment. It is often called the infinite monkey theorem.

Borel was also a teacher and a builder of schools. He spent many years teaching at the École normale supérieure. He held a special chair for the theory of functions until 1941. In 1922, he started the Paris Institute of Statistics. This was the oldest school for statistics in France. Later, in 1928, he helped start the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris. He loved sharing knowledge with others. He wrote many books about math and science. These books helped many people learn new things.

He was also a very active leader in French politics. He was a member of the Chamber of Deputies for many years. From 1924 to 1936, he helped make laws for his country. In 1925, he served as the Minister of the Navy. This was a very big job in the government. During the Second World War, he was very brave. He joined the French Resistance to help his country. This group worked to protect France during the war. He was later given the Resistance Medal in 1950.

Many things in science still carry his name today. There is a crater on the Moon named after him. Scientists also use things like Borel measure and Borel algebra. His ideas helped bridge math with physics. For example, he wrote about special relativity in 1914. He showed how certain shapes stay the same during movement. Borel died in Paris on February 3, 1956. His life was full of many different kinds of work. He was a mathematician, a teacher, and a leader.
