Hermann Minkowski was a brilliant mathematician who changed how we see the world.

He was born in 1864 in a town called Aleksota. His family moved to Königsberg in 1872 to escape hard times in the Russian Empire. Minkowski studied at the Albertina University of Königsberg. He earned his doctorate there in 1885. He was a very gifted student. In 1883, he won a big prize from the French Academy of Sciences. He was only eighteen years old when this happened. This was very unusual for such a young man.

Minkowski loved to find patterns between different kinds of math. He looked at how numbers and shapes work together. He created a new way of thinking called the geometry of numbers. This method used shapes to solve tricky problems in number theory. He also studied things called quadratic forms. This work led him to think about spaces with many dimensions. He even created things called the Minkowski Sausage and the Minkowski cover. These were special tools for understanding curves and shapes.

One of his most famous ideas changed physics forever. He was a teacher at ETH Zurich. One of his students was Albert Einstein. In 1905, Einstein introduced his special theory of relativity. By 1908, Minkowski realized something very important about this theory. He showed that space and time are not separate things. Instead, they are joined together in a four-dimensional space. Today, we call this Minkowski spacetime. This idea helps us understand how the universe works.

Minkowski worked at many important universities. He taught in Bonn, Königsberg, Zürich, and Göttingen. In 1902, he joined the math department in Göttingen. There, he became a close friend of the famous mathematician David Hilbert. They were great colleagues for many years. Minkowski had a brother named Oskar who was a well-known doctor. Hermann married Auguste Adler in 1897, and they had two daughters.

We still remember Minkowski's name in many ways today. There is even an asteroid named 12493 Minkowski. Scientists also use his name for many math rules and tools. His work on space and time is still used by scientists everywhere. Minkowski died in 1909 from appendicitis in Göttingen. His friend David Hilbert spoke about him at a memorial. Even though he lived a short life, his ideas are huge. He showed us that math can explain the very fabric of our world.
