David Hilbert was one of the most important mathematicians of his time.

He was born in 1862 in the Province of Prussia. His father, Otto, was a county judge. His mother, Maria, loved philosophy and prime numbers. Hilbert was a very curious person who loved to solve puzzles. He believed that human reason could solve any problem. He famously said that we must know and we shall know.

This idea of solving everything through pure thought guided his whole life.

Hilbert worked on many different kinds of math. He studied things like geometry and algebra. He also helped create proof theory, which is a way to study how we know things are true. He worked on many areas including invariant theory and mathematical physics. One of his big ideas involved sets, which are groups of objects. He also defended the work of Georg Cantor regarding transfinite numbers.

He helped build the tools that scientists use in physics today. His work helped make math more exact and rigorous.

Much of Hilbert's career happened at the University of Göttingen. He moved there in 1895 to become a professor. During his time there, Göttingen became the best place in the world for math.

He was a very busy teacher and leader. He helped open a new building for the Mathematical Institute in 1930. He also served as an editor for a famous math journal called Mathematische Annalen. He stayed at this university for the rest of his life.

Hilbert had many successful students and friends. He taught 69 Ph.D. students during his career. Many of them, like Hermann Weyl, became very famous mathematicians.

He also had a close friend named Hermann Minkowski. In 1900, Hilbert gave a famous speech about math problems. This list of problems helped guide math research for the whole 20th century. He was even elected as a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences in 1907.

Hilbert lived through a very difficult time in history. In 1933, the Nazis began removing many people from the university. Many of Hilbert's colleagues and friends were forced to leave. This changed the math community at Göttingen forever. Hilbert himself struggled with health problems later in life. He died in 1943. Even though he faced hard times, his ideas about the power of thought remained strong. His life showed how math can help us understand the world.
