He lived from 1864 to 1909. He taught at many universities. These were in Bonn, Zürich, and Göttingen.

Minkowski was a very smart thinker. At age eighteen, he won a big prize. This was the Mathematics Prize of the French Academy of Sciences. It was a rare feat for such a young man. He also studied how shapes and numbers work together. He called this the geometry of numbers. This method helped solve hard math puzzles.

Minkowski is also known for his work on space and time. He was a teacher to Albert Einstein. Minkowski showed that space and time are not separate. Instead, they are joined together. We call this Minkowski spacetime. This idea helped people understand Einstein's theory of relativity.

Many things carry his name today. There is an asteroid named 12493 Minkowski. People also use his name for special math tools. He died in 1909 from appendicitis. His friend, David Hilbert, was a great math leader too. They were close colleagues for many years.
