Pafnuty Lvovich Chebyshev was a very important Russian mathematician. Many people call him the founding father of Russian mathematics. He worked on many different areas of math. These included probability, which studies chance. He also studied statistics, mechanics, and number theory. His work helped people understand how numbers and objects behave.

Chebyshev's life was not always easy. He was one of nine children born in Okatovo. As a boy, he had a limp and used a stick to walk. This made it hard to play many games with other children. Because of this, he spent more time on his studies. He learned reading and writing from his mother. He also learned French and arithmetic from his cousin. A music teacher helped him learn to think with great exactness.

He began his university studies in Moscow in 1837. His teacher, N.D. Brashman, had a big influence on him. In 1841, Chebyshev won a silver medal for his work on equations. That same year, his family faced a hard time because of a famine. They had to leave Moscow, and they could no longer pay for his school. Chebyshev did not stop learning. He studied for six months to pass his master examinations in 1843. In 1846, he finished a big essay about the theory of probability.

Chebyshev became a famous professor at St. Petersburg University. He taught there for many years and became a merited professor in 1872. He did much more than just teach in a classroom. He helped with math questions for the government. He even studied how to use math for ballistics. In 1878, he shared a paper about how to cut cloth using geometry.

Many mathematical ideas are named after him today. There is the Chebyshev inequality, which helps prove other math laws. There is also the Bertrand–Chebyshev theorem about prime numbers. He created special math tools called Chebyshev polynomials. His name is even found in space. There is a crater on the moon named Chebyshev. There is also an asteroid named 2010 Chebyshev. He left behind a huge legacy with over 17,000 mathematical descendants.
