He was born on June 14, 1856, in Ryazan. As a student, he was known for being rebellious. He did not enjoy most school subjects. However, he was very good at mathematics. He later studied at the Saint Petersburg Imperial University. There, he learned from many important teachers. These teachers taught him subjects like calculus and geometry.

Markov is best known for studying how things follow one another. He looked at sequences where one event depends on the next. To show how this worked, he studied a famous book. The book was called Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin.

Markov looked at the first 20,000 letters in the text. He did not care about the story or the poetry. Instead, he treated the letters as simple symbols. He grouped them into vowels and consonants. He studied the patterns of how these letters changed in a chain. This work helped create the idea of Markov chains.

Markov's life in math was very busy. He won a gold medal in 1877 for solving a hard problem. In 1880, he defended his master's thesis. Four years later, he defended his doctoral thesis. He became a professor at Saint Petersburg University. He taught many different subjects. These included probability theory and the calculus of differences. He even taught after he was allowed to retire.

Math ran in his family. His younger brother was Vladimir Andreyevich Markov. The two brothers worked together on a math rule. This rule is called the Markov brothers' inequality. His son was also a notable mathematician. His son's name was also Andrey Andreyevich Markov. The son studied things like recursive function theory.

Markov was a man with strong beliefs. He was an atheist. In 1912, he asked to be removed from the Russian Orthodox Church. He did this after the writer Leo Tolstoy was removed from the church. Markov also had a strong sense of right and wrong. In 1908, he refused to follow a rule about watching students. Because of this, he stopped teaching at the university. He continued his work until he died on July 20, 1922. He was 66 years old.
