Juri Lotman was a very important thinker who studied how we understand the world. He was a scholar of literature and history. He was also a leader in a field called semiotics. Semiotics is the study of signs and how they work together. A sign can be a word, a painting, or even a movie. Lotman wanted to know how these things share meaning. He helped people see how culture is like a big, connected system.

Lotman looked at many different subjects to find answers. He studied how poems are built and how films tell stories. He even looked at things like robotics. One of his big ideas was the semiosphere. He created this word in 1984 to describe the world of culture. He thought of culture as a space where all these signs live and interact. This way of thinking helped people understand how human meaning works.

His journey as a scholar began in Russia. He was born in Petrograd in 1922. His family was very smart and loved learning. His sisters were also experts in music and science. Lotman studied philology, which is the study of language and literature. During World War II, he served as a radio operator. After the war, he finished his studies and earned a special diploma.

In 1950, Lotman moved to Estonia. He began teaching at the University of Tartu. In 1964, he helped start a special summer school in Kääriku. This school brought many thinkers together. They formed a group called the Tartu–Moscow Semiotic School. They also started a journal called Sign Systems Studies. This is now the oldest journal in the world for studying signs.

Lotman was a very busy and successful writer. He wrote more than 800 books and papers during his life. He wrote famous books about the poet Pushkin and the art of film. Many people all over the world read his work. He was even invited to join great science groups in Britain, Norway, and Sweden. His family also stayed involved in learning and art. His sons became a professor, an artist, and a politician.
