This style focused on the lives of rural workers and farmers. These writers often showed an idealized view of traditional village life. They also used their stories to question big changes in the world. One famous example is his 1979 novel, Farewell to Matyora. This book tells of a fictional village that must be cleared away. This happens so a large hydroelectric dam can be built on the river.

He was born in the village of Ust-Uda in Eastern Siberia.
