Rasputin wrote about the lives of people in rural villages. He belonged to a group of writers called Village Prose. These writers wrote about the hard work of farmers. They also wrote about old ways of life. One of his most famous books is Farewell to Matyora. It tells the story of a village that must move. This happens so a large dam can be built.

Rasputin also cared deeply about nature. He worked to protect Lake Baikal. He fought against projects that moved river water. He believed these changes hurt the land and its people. He won many awards for his work. One was the USSR State Prize in 1977. He lived much of his life in the city of Irkutsk. He died in Moscow in 2015.
