People built four large dams on the river. These dams make power for people. They also make big pools of water called reservoirs. These pools flooded many villages and farms in the river valley. This changed how people lived in the area. Some people were unhappy about these changes. Boats can travel on some parts of the river. They can go from Lake Baikal to Irkutsk. They can also go from Irkutsk to Bratsk. However, the dams do not have locks for boats. This means boats cannot travel the whole river. Long ago, the river was a very important route. It helped people move through Siberia. Now, people use roads and trains to travel instead.
