The Angara is a very important river in Siberia. It flows through two parts of Russia. These places are called Irkutsk Oblast and Krasnoyarsk Krai.

The river begins its journey at Lake Baikal. It flows out from the lake near a settlement called Listvyanka. From there, the water travels north for a long way. It eventually joins a much larger river called the Yenisey. The Angara is a key part of this huge water system.

Water moves along the river in a specific path. It flows past several large cities in the Irkutsk Oblast. These cities include Irkutsk, Angarsk, Bratsk, and Ust-Ilimsk.

After passing these cities, the river crosses the Angara Range. Then, it turns toward the west. It enters the Krasnoyarsk Krai region. Finally, it meets the Yenisey river near a place called Strelka.

Humans have changed the river in many ways. Since the 1950s, people have built four large dams. These are called hydroelectric plants.

They use the moving water to make electricity. These dams created huge pools of water called reservoirs. The Irkutsk Dam made the Irkutsk Reservoir. The Bratsk Dam made the Bratsk Reservoir. The Ust-Ilimsk Dam made the Ust-Ilimsk Reservoir. Lastly, the Boguchany Dam was built at Kodinsk.

These big changes had a hard effect on people. The new reservoirs flooded many farms and villages.

Even an old fort called Ilimsk was lost under the water. Because of this, some thinkers were very upset. A writer named Valentin Rasputin wrote about these changes. He wrote a novel called Farewell to Matyora in 1976. He also wrote a book called Siberia, Siberia in 1991. He worried about how the dams changed rural life.

Traveling on the river has changed over time. Long ago, the river was a main path for people. Since about 1630, it helped people move through Siberia. They used it to connect the Yenisey to Lake Baikal. Today, boats can only travel on some parts of the river. They can go from Lake Baikal to Irkutsk. They can also go from Irkutsk to Bratsk. However, the dams do not have locks for boats. This means boats cannot travel the whole way. Now, most people use the Trans-Siberian Railway instead.
