Sayan Mountains

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Sayan Mountains are a huge mountain range in southern Siberia. They stretch across southeastern Russia and northern Mongolia.

This range covers many Russian areas like Buryatia, Irkutsk Oblast, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Tuva, and Khakassia. Long ago, these mountains acted as a border. They sat between the cultures of Mongolia and Russia. Today, the mountains are a protected and isolated place. The Soviet Union kept this area closed starting in 1944.

The mountains are split into two main systems. The Western Sayan runs northeast to southwest. It sits between the Shapshal Range and the Abakan Range. This part includes many smaller ranges like the Aradan and Borus. Some peaks here are very important, such as Kyzlasov Peak and Zvezdny Peak.

The Eastern Sayan runs northwest to southeast. It stretches from the Yenisei River to the Angara Range. This side features many "White Mountains" with permanent snow on their peaks. Rivers in the East often form deep gorges and many waterfalls.

Nature looks very different depending on where you stand. In the higher regions, you can find thick forests. These forests grow larch, pine, juniper, birch, and alder trees. You might also see colorful rhododendrons and berries.

On the upper slopes, many boulders are covered in moss and lichen. The mountains also hold beautiful, cool lakes. One special place is the Lake of Mountain Spirits in the Ergaki mountains.

Mount Munku-Sardyk is the highest point in the whole Sayan system. It stands at 3,492 meters tall. During the last Ice Age, this area looked very different. Huge glaciers flowed down from the high peaks. One glacier was about 30 kilometers wide. It flowed toward Lake Baikal and ended at an altitude of 500 meters.

These ice sheets shaped the land we see today. Even now, small glaciers remain in some parts of the mountains.

The Sayan region has a very deep history with people. Some experts believe it is the home of the Uralic languages. It is also linked to the beginnings of the Turkic languages. Long ago, the Samoyedic people lived here. They may have been the first to domesticate reindeer. This created a special way of life for reindeer hunters and herders. Many Evenki groups lived near these mountains for a long time. Today, some local groups still keep these traditional ways of life in the Eastern Sayan.
