This range sits where four different countries meet: Russia, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan. It is a very remote and large area. Many important rivers begin their journeys here. The Irtysh and Ob rivers both have their headwaters in these mountains.

The name Altai comes from an old word meaning "gold" or "golden." This name is used in many different languages across the region.

The mountains have many different shapes and sizes. In the north, the Sailughem Mountains are very steep and hard to reach.

The Altai Mountains have a very old history.

Long ago, a group of people called the Denisovans lived in the Denisova Cave. They lived at the same time as Neanderthals and modern humans. This makes the Altai one of the only places where all three groups lived. Scientists found their DNA in the cave because the cold kept it safe. Other ancient people, like the Afanasievans, were also among the first herders in this region.

Many different animals call these mountains home. The land has many habitats, like grassy steppes and thick forests. You might see a snow leopard on the steep cliffs.

Other animals include wolves, brown bears, and lynx. In the northern parts, you can find moose and reindeer. There are also many types of deer, such as the Altai wapiti.

Even the wisent, a large animal, lived here in the past.

Today, people still live and work in the Altai. The population is small but comes from many different ethnic groups. Some people are semi-nomadic, which means they move with their animals. Many people make a living through farming, hunting, and mining. They raise animals like sheep, horses, and cattle. The mountains remain a very special place where nature and history meet.
