The Irtysh is a huge and famous river in Asia. It is the longest tributary in the whole world. A tributary is a river that flows into a larger one. In this case, the Irtysh flows into the Ob River. This river travels through three different countries: China, Kazakhstan, and Russia.

It forms a massive drainage basin. This area covers much of Western Siberia and the Altai Mountains.

To picture its journey, start in the Mongolian Altai mountains. This area is part of the Dzungaria region in China. The river starts as the Kara-Irtysh, which means Black Irtysh. It flows northwest through Lake Zaysan in Kazakhstan. From there, it meets other rivers like the Ishim and the Tobol. Finally, it joins the Ob River near Khanty-Mansiysk in Russia.

People have lived near the Irtysh for a very long time. Many Mongol and Turkic groups once stayed on its banks. In the year 657, a big battle happened here between the Tang dynasty and the Western Turkic Khaganate. Later, in 1208, the Mongol Empire fought near the Bukhtarma river. In the 1500s, the Tatar Khanate of Sibir was in the middle part of the river. The Russians began building towns like Tobolsk in 1587 to stay in the area.

Today, the river is very busy with many different uses. From April to October, the ice melts so ships can move. Tankers and cargo vessels carry goods through the water.

Many cities sit along the banks, such as Oskemen, Semey, and Omsk.

Traveling across the water is easy because of many bridges. Seven railway bridges span the wide river. One very old bridge in Omsk opened in 1896.
