geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A tributary is a special kind of stream or river. It flows into a larger body of water like a main river or a lake.

This smaller river does not flow directly into the sea or ocean. Instead, it helps drain a large area called a drainage basin. This basin collects water from the land and moves it along. All this water eventually travels to an ocean or another river.

When two bodies of water meet, it is called a confluence. You can describe a tributary by which side it enters from. We use the terms left-bank or right-bank tributaries. To find this, you must face downstream with the current. This means you are looking in the direction the water flows.

If you were floating on a raft, it would be the side the river enters. This helps people avoid rough or turbulent water near the meeting point.

Some tributaries are known by their position along the main river. An early tributary joins the main river near its source. This happens before the river reaches its halfway point. A late tributary joins the river much further downstream. This occurs closer to the river's mouth. These names help people understand where the water meets. It tells you how far along the path you have traveled.

In the United States, people often use the word forks. Some tributaries have the same name as the main river. These are usually named by a compass direction like North or South. The American River in California has three forks. These are the North, Middle, and South forks. The Chicago River also uses these names for its branches.

People name them this way as they explore the land.

Scientists use special ways to order these rivers. One method is called the Strahler stream order. This looks at the rivers like a hierarchy or a ranking. A first-order tributary is usually the smallest one. When two first-order streams join, they form a second-order tributary. This creates a pattern that looks like the branches of a tree.
