Streams are very important parts of our world. They act as conduits in the water cycle to move water around. They also help with groundwater recharge by letting water sink into the earth.

Streams serve as vital corridors for fish and wildlife to migrate. The special area of land right next to a stream is called a riparian zone.

How does a stream get its water? It usually happens in three ways. First, there is surface runoff from rain or melting snow.

This runoff often starts as a thin layer called sheet wash. It then forms tiny paths called rills before gathering into a channel. Second, water can come from sunlight hitting the ground. This is called daylighted subterranean water. Third, streams receive surfaced groundwater, which is often called spring water.

Groundwater stays more constant than surface water. Its flow depends on long-term patterns of rain and snow.

People use many different names for streams depending on where they live. A very small and shallow stream is often called a brook.
