The Mamberamo River is a huge and powerful part of the island of New Guinea.

It sits in the Papua province of Indonesia. This river is the second longest on the island after the Sepik River. It is also the second largest river in Oceania by how much water it carries. In Indonesia, it is the second largest river by volume and the widest river of all. The river begins where two rivers, the Tariku and Taritatu, meet in the Lakes Plains region. This area is full of green grasslands and freshwater swamp forests.

The river follows a busy path through the land. It flows north between the Van Rees Range and the Foja Mountains. As it moves, the water travels through deep gorges and fast rapids. The last 160 kilometers of the river are easy enough for boats to travel on. Near the coast, the river becomes very wide and forms a large delta. This delta is made of marshes and lowlands. Finally, the Mamberamo flows into the Pacific Ocean at Point D'Urville. The land here is geologically young and can still have earthquakes or landslides.

People have been exploring this area for a long time. In 1545, a Spanish navigator named Iñigo Ortiz de Retes sailed near the mouth of the river. He named the island Nueva Guinea, which is how we know the name today. Much later, in 1883, a Dutchman named Dr. D. F. van Braam Morris was the first European to enter the river mouth. He wanted to see if steamships could travel up the river. In the 1990s, the government thought about building a large dam here. This plan was stopped after a financial crisis between 1998 and 1999.

The Mamberamo area is a very important place for nature. It is a biodiversity hotspot, which means it has many different living things. Scientists recently found many new plants and animals in the Foja Mountains. They even found the first new bird species from New Guinea in 60 years! You might find crocodiles in the water or a northern cassowary in the trees. The river is special because it is one of the largest rivers in the world without any dams. This keeps the water flowing naturally for all the animals.

Life near the river is very connected to the land. Many people live in the valley and hunt or fish to survive. They also grow food in gardens near their homes or the river banks. They plant things like sweet potatoes, manioc, bananas, and coconuts. Some people trade items like dried fish or crocodile skins. The river changes the landscape all the time as it curves and moves. This creates many different homes for the many birds, frogs, and plants that live there.
