The river has a very interesting path. It starts high up in the Victor Emanuel Range. From the mountains, it flows north-west and then turns north-east. The river winds back and forth like a snake. This winding shape is called a serpentine path. Unlike some other big rivers, the Sepik has no delta at the end. It flows straight into the Bismarck Sea near the town of Wewak.

European explorers first reached the river in 1885. A ship named the Samoa was the first to enter the river mouth. At first, the river had a German name. It was called Kaiserin Augustafluß after a German Empress. Later, a man named Leonhard Schultze used the name Sepik. This name became the official one after World War I. Today, the Sepik is a vital part of the island's history.
