It is located north of Australia. The Torres Strait is the wide stretch of water between them. Long ago, the sea levels were much lower. During those times, New Guinea and Australia were joined together. They formed one big landmass called Sahul.

Today, they are separate islands.

The island has a very busy and diverse landscape. A huge chain of mountains called the New Guinea Highlands runs through the middle.

These mountains are very tall. The highest peak is Puncak Jaya. It reaches 4,884 meters into the sky. Because it is so high, it even has glaciers made of ice.

Most of the island is warm and wet. It has huge rainforests and many wetlands. There are also large areas of savanna grasslands. You can even find some of the biggest mangrove forests in the world.

Many large rivers flow across the island. The Sepik is the longest river in New Guinea.

It is 1,100 kilometers long. The Fly River is another giant river. It is 1,050 kilometers long. The Fly River carries a huge amount of water. In fact, it carries more water than all the rivers in Australia combined. These rivers are very important for moving people and goods. The annual rainfall is very high here. It can reach up to 10,000 mm every year.

People have given this island many different names over time. In 1545, a Spanish explorer named Yñigo Ortiz de Retez called it New Guinea. He thought the people there looked like people from the Guinea region in Africa.

Before that, some people used the name Papua. There are many theories about where that word comes from. Some say it means "not united." Others think it comes from a phrase meaning "the land below the sunset." In the past, the Dutch also called it Schouten island.

Today, the island is divided into two main parts. The eastern half is the nation of Papua New Guinea. Port Moresby is one of its major cities.
