The Madeira River is a massive waterway in South America.

It is the largest tributary of the Amazon River. This means it is the biggest river that flows into the Amazon. It provides about 15% of all the water in the Amazon basin. Many large rivers join together to form the Madeira. These include the Guaporé, the Mamoré, and the Beni rivers. The river's water is often brown and cloudy. Scientists call this type of water "whitewater" because of the sediment.

The river follows a long and winding path. It starts where the Madre de Dios and Mamoré rivers meet. From there, it flows northward to form a border between Bolivia and Brazil. Later, the river turns toward the northeast through the Brazilian states of Rondônia and Amazonas. Some parts of the river have a notable drop in the bed. In the past, these areas had famous rapids like the falls of Teotônio.

Today, many of these rapids are covered by water from large dams. These dams help create electricity for people to use.

People have lived near this river for a very long time. Long ago, the river was known by the indigenous name Cuyari. Maps from 1747 show this old name. Many different groups of people speak unique languages in this region. These include groups like the Mojeño, the Karitiana, and the Suruí. The river has also been a place for big machines. Old steamships once traveled these waters.

Today, the river is a very busy place for shipping grains.

Moving goods on the river is a huge job. Large barges carry millions of tons of soy and corn. They load these grains at places like Porto Velho. The ships travel to ports near the mouth of the Amazon. From there, giant ships carry the food to Europe and Asia. The river also helps move fuel to different states. This helps supply gasoline to many people in Brazil. The river is a vital path for trade and travel.

The Madeira River is also a wonderful home for nature. It is one of the richest places for fish in the world. You can find more than 900 different species of fish there. It is also the only home for the Bolivian river dolphin. This special dolphin lives only in this river system. The water comes from the high Andes mountains. This makes the river a deep and powerful part of the Earth.
