geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Rio Negro is a truly amazing river in South America. Its name means "Black River" because it looks dark from a distance.

It is the largest blackwater river in the entire world. This river is also one of the ten largest rivers by how much water it carries. In fact, it provides about 14% of all the water in the Amazon basin. This makes it a very important part of the natural world.

The water has a very special look and color. It looks like a cup of strong tea. This dark color comes from humic acid in the water. This acid is made when plants in sandy areas break down. Even though the water is dark, the river is full of life. It is not a "hunger river" as some people once thought. Instead, it supports a large fishing industry and has many turtle beaches.

Many explorers have traveled along this long path over the years. The Spanish explorer Francisco de Orellana named the river in 1541. Later, scientists like Alexander von Humboldt explored it in the 1800s. In 1924, Alexander H. Rice used aerial photography to map the area. He traveled from the Orinoco river through a canal to reach the Rio Negro. More recently, a National Geographic team used a hovercraft to travel the water in 1968.

The river starts in the mountains of Colombia. In this upper part, people call it the Guainía River. It flows southeast through Venezuela before it finally enters Brazil. The river grows much larger as it receives many other rivers. One special link is the Casiquiare canal. This canal connects the Rio Negro to the Orinoco river basin. This allows certain water animals to travel between two different river systems.

As the river reaches Brazil, it becomes very wide. During the wet season from April to October, it floods the land. This creates many islands and winding water paths. Near the city of Manaus, the river meets the Solimões River. This creates a famous sight called the Meeting of Waters.
