It is the second-longest river in the country. Many people call it the main source of the Amazon River. This is because it carries more water than other parts. The river begins about 160 km northeast of Lima. It flows through the Andes mountains and high plateaus. It moves through deep valleys along the eastern side of the mountains.

The river travels through many different types of land. In the middle, it passes through high jungle areas. These areas have many rapids and waterfalls. Some of these narrow gaps in the hills are called pongos. The Pongo de Manseriche is the last big gap. It is about 600 m deep and very narrow. In some spots, it is only 30 m wide. The water can move very fast through this canyon.

People have explored this river for a long time. In 1743, a Frenchman named Charles Marie de La Condamine traveled it. He went all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Later, Bertrand Flornoy found the river's sources in 1941 and 1942. Many others have traveled the river in kayaks or rafts. Some people even tried to paddle the whole way. These journeys help us learn about the wild water.

There are some very famous parts of the river. A 552-km section is called the "Grand Canyon of the Amazon."

This canyon is up to 3000 m deep. That is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA. This area is very dry and hot. Some parts are known as the hottest area in Peru. The river also flows past the village of Calemar.

The river is very important for the earth and people. It is home to groups like the Urarina and Candoshi. However, the river faces many hard jobs today. Oil spills and mining can cause pollution. There are also plans to build many large dams. In March 2024, a Peruvian court made a landmark ruling. They said the river has rights to be clean. It also has the right to its own natural flow.
