The Marañón River is a very important river in Peru.

It is the second-longest river in the country. Many people call it the main source of the Amazon River. This is because it carries a lot of water. The river starts high in the Andes mountains. It flows through deep valleys and thick jungles.

Some parts of the river are very wild. The water flows through narrow gaps in the hills. These gaps are called pongos. In these places, the water moves fast over rapids. One big gap is the Pongo de Manseriche. It is very deep and can be dangerous for boats.

Another part of the river is very special. It has a large canyon that people call the "Grand Canyon of the Amazon."

This canyon is very deep and dry. It is even deeper than the Grand Canyon in the USA.

Many groups of people live near the river. In 2024, a court in Peru made a big choice. They ruled that the river has rights. This means the river has the right to be clean and free from pollution.
