geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Japurá River is a very long river. It is part of the Amazon basin. The river starts in the Andes mountains in Colombia. There, people call it the Caquetá River. It flows east into Brazil. In Brazil, the name changes to the Japurá River.

The water is a milky white color. This is because it carries earth from the mountains. When the river meets the Amazon, it leaves bits of soil behind. This makes the mouth of the river very wide and complex. One part of the river flows into the Amazon near the city of Tefé. Another part winds for 300 km before it joins.

Many animals live in these waters. You might see huge catfish or electric eels. Piranhas, turtles, and caimans also live here. Much of the nearby jungle has been cleared for farms. People grow rice, corn, and sugar cane there.

Traveling on the river can be hard. The water has many rapids. These are parts of the river where the water flows very fast over rocks. People use small boats and motorboats to move goods. These boats are very important for travel in this area.
