Ucayali River

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Ucayali River is a major river in Peru. It is a main part of the Amazon River. The river starts north of Lake Titicaca. It flows until it meets the Marañón River. Near that meeting point is the city of Nauta. The city of Pucallpa sits right on the river banks.

The river is very wide. It has many islands. The water moves with a strong pull. Sometimes, fallen trees or rocks make the water spin. These are called whirlpools.

Many animals live in the water. You can find giant otters there. Pink dolphins and manatees also live in the river. Many of these animals live in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve.

In the past, the river was used for the rubber trade. This was a hard time for local tribes. Groups like the Asháninka and Shipibo lived along the river. They faced many struggles with rubber bosses. The river also helps name parts of Peru. It gives its name to the Ucayali Region.
