Ucayali River

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Ucayali River is a very important part of the Amazon River. It is known as a main headstream for the Amazon. This big river starts north of Lake Titicaca in Peru. It flows through the Arequipa region of the country. Eventually, the Ucayali meets the Marañón River. This meeting happens near the city of Nauta. The city of Pucallpa also sits right on the river banks.

Traveling on the river can be quite a hard job. The width of the Ucayali changes a lot. This is because there are many islands in the water. The current flows from the north to the south. Most of the river is very wide. You can usually find a channel that is 120 meters wide. This channel is at least 3 meters deep. There are five difficult passes in the river. These spots have many fallen trees and rafts of wood. Sometimes, big rocks from the mountains fall into the river. These rocks can cause the water to spin in whirlpools.

People have explored this river for a long time. It has had many different names over the years. People once called it San Miguel or Ucayare. They also called it Poro or Apu-Poro. Peru has sent many expensive trips to explore the area. In 1867, one group claimed to get close to Lima. A small steamer named "Napo" traveled up the strong currents. It went past the junction with the Pachitea River. The boat even went up to the Tambo River. It later sailed up the Urubamba River toward Cuzco.

History shows that the river was once used for a rubber boom. This was a time when people collected rubber from the forest. Many rubber bosses, called barons, lived and worked here. One famous man was Carlos Fitzcarrald. He became a very rich businessman by 1888. He also helped find a new path between rivers. This path is called the Isthmus of Fitzcarrald. It connects the Urubamba River to the Manu tributary. This path helped start the rubber trade in other areas.

Life along the river is also home to many animals. The Ucayali is a great place to see wildlife. You can find the Amazon river dolphin in the water. Giant otters and the Amazonian manatee also live here. Many of these animals live in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. This reserve is located near the city of Nauta. The lower part of the Ucayali forms the border of this reserve. The river is so important that it names a whole region. It gives its name to the Ucayali Region of Peru.
