It flows through Guatemala and Mexico. It forms a natural line between these two lands. The river starts when two rivers join together. These are the Pasión River and the Salinas River.

The river travels through deep canyons. It also flows through the flat lands of Tabasco. In this area, the Grijalva River flows into the Usumacinta. This meeting of rivers creates a huge wetland. We call this place the Pantanos de Centla.
