The Uruguay River is a major river in South America.

It flows from north to south. The river forms parts of the borders for Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. It starts in the Serra do Mar in Brazil. From there, it flows through uneven land. This land has many rapids and falls.

One very special part is a deep canyon. This canyon formed during the Ice Age. The river is much narrower now. You can see the canyon at the Moconá Falls.

Most waterfalls go across a river. These falls run along the river instead. They are up to 3 km wide. They are not visible for 150 days each year.

The river is very useful to people. It helps make power through electricity. Big dams like the Salto Grande Dam catch the water. Five international bridges cross the river. These bridges help people travel between the three countries. The river joins with the Paraná River. Together, they form the Río de la Plata estuary.
