geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Colonia del Sacramento is a city in Uruguay.

It sits on a peninsula by the Río de la Plata. This river is near Buenos Aires, Argentina. Many people travel across the water by ferry boat.

The city is very old. The Portuguese started it in 1680. The old part of the city has winding streets. These streets follow the shape of the land. The newer parts were built by the Spanish. Those streets look like a checkerboard.
