Colonia del Sacramento

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Colonia del Sacramento is a significant city located in southwestern Uruguay. It sits on a peninsula that extends into the Río de la Plata. This large river separates the city from Buenos Aires, Argentina. The city serves as the capital of the Colonia Department. As of the 2023 census, the population was approximately 32,174 people. It is a place where deep history meets modern industry. The historic quarter is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city's layout reveals its complex past through its urban fabric. The Portuguese section, known as the Barrio Histórico, covers 16 hectares. This area features an irregular street network that fits the natural terrain. In contrast, the newer Spanish colonial area uses an orthogonal layout. This means the streets are arranged in a straight checkerboard pattern. Most of the original fortification walls were removed in 1777 and 1859. Today, these two distinct styles create a unique visual contrast.

The history of the settlement began with Portuguese exploration in 1680. Manuel Lobo arrived at San Gabriel Island with five ships. His group included about 400 people, such as soldiers, carpenters, and stonecutters.

They established a post on 28 January 1680. However, the site was soon attacked by a force of 3,400 men. This force captured the town on the night of 6–7 August 1680. The city would spend many years changing hands between different empires.

Control of the colony shifted frequently due to various wars and treaties.

For example, the War of the Spanish Succession led to a siege in 1704. After this, the Treaty of Utrecht returned the colony to Portugal.

Later, the Treaty of Madrid in 1750 was declared null and void. In 1777, the Treaty of San Ildefonso made the colony a Spanish possession. Eventually, it became part of Brazil after 1816 under the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves.

The city was later incorporated into Uruguay after its independence.

Visitors may experience frequent fog and frost during the winter months. Precipitation is distributed evenly throughout the year, averaging 1,039 mm. The annual average temperature is approximately 17 °C. These conditions support the local environment and the city's growth.

Many notable landmarks define the character of the city today. The Portuguese Museum is housed in an 18th-century building.

It displays old maps, jewelry, and naval uniforms. Visitors can also see the Basilica del Santísimo Sacramento, built of stone in 1808. The Plaza de toros Real de San Carlos is another landmark. It was once a bullring but is now a venue for performing arts. The city also hosts the professional football team Plaza Colonia.

Looking toward the future, the city is planning significant expansion. A project called Colonia Ala Este is currently in process. This is intended to be a sustainable city focused on the knowledge economy. The plan involves an initial investment of more than US$100 million. The new site will cover 500 hectares and include seven kilometers of coastline.
