Many people travel between these places by ferry boat. The city is the capital of the Colonia Department. As of the 2023 census, about 32,174 people live there. It is a place where history and modern life meet.

The city has two very different styles of streets. The old Portuguese part is called the Barrio Histórico. Its streets are irregular because they follow the shape of the land.

The newer Spanish area uses a checkerboard layout. This means the streets are straight and cross at right angles. The historic quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This title shows that the area is very important to the world.

History began here in 1680 when the Portuguese arrived. Manuel Lobo led five ships to San Gabriel Island. He brought about 400 people, including soldiers and stonecutters.

They started building a post in January 1680. Later, a force of 3,400 men captured the town. The city changed hands many times between Spain and Portugal.

There is also a lighthouse and ruins of a 17th-century convent. The Basilica del Santísimo Sacramento is a beautiful stone church. You can even see the Plaza de toros, which was once a bullring. Now, it is used as a place for performing arts. The city also has a professional football team called Plaza Colonia.

The weather in Colonia is mild and humid. Summers feel warm, while winters are cool.

You might see frequent fog or frost during the cold months. The city is also planning for a big future. They want to build a new, green city called Colonia Ala Este. This new area would have forests and seven kilometers of coastline. It could eventually double the population to about 60,000 people.
