It is a busy and important place for the region.

The city is made of several different quarters. Punda and Otrobanda sit on opposite sides of the Sint Anna Bay. This bay leads into a large natural harbour called the Schottegat. Other areas include Scharloo and Pietermaai Smal. These two sit across from each other on the smaller Waaigat harbour.

Two bridges help people cross the water. The Queen Emma Bridge is a long pontoon bridge. The Queen Juliana Bridge is also used for road traffic. It arches high over the bay.

History began in the city a long time ago. The Dutch West India Company took the island from Spain in 1634. They first called the Punda area "de punt." The city was originally built with walls around it. In 1674, the Curaçao synagogue was built by Jewish traders. It is the oldest surviving synagogue in the Americas.
