Willemstad is a big city.

Willemstad is the capital city of Curaçao.

The city has many parts. Two parts are Punda and Otrobanda. They sit on opposite sides of a bay. A long bridge called Queen Emma Bridge connects them. The city is known for its colorful buildings. These buildings use styles from the Netherlands. Because it is so special, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Willemstad has a large natural harbor.

Willemstad is the capital and largest city of Curaçao.

The city is made of several different quarters. Punda and Otrobanda sit on opposite sides of the Sint Anna Bay. This bay leads into a large natural harbour called the Schottegat. Other areas include Scharloo and Pietermaai Smal. These two sit across from each other on the smaller Waaigat harbour.
History began in the city a long time ago. The Dutch West India Company took the island from Spain in 1634. They first called the Punda area "de punt." The city was originally built with walls around it. In 1674, the Curaçao synagogue was built by Jewish traders. It is the oldest surviving synagogue in the Americas.
Industry has changed how the city works over time. The city has a deep water harbour for big ships. It is one of the largest oil handling ports in the Caribbean. A large oil refinery was built by Royal Dutch Shell in 1915. This refinery was once the largest in the world.
Willemstad is also a place for learning and sports. The University of Curaçao is located in the city. Many famous athletes were born here, too. Several Major League Baseball players come from Willemstad.

The city is organized into several distinct quarters and harbours. The Punda and Otrobanda quarters are separated by the Sint Anna Bay. This inlet flows into a large natural harbour known as the Schottegat.

The history of Willemstad began in the early 17th century. In 1634, the Dutch West India Company captured the island from Spain. The Punda area was established then and was originally called "de punt," which means "the point" in Dutch. The city was originally constructed as a walled city for protection. During the late 17th century, there were more than 200 houses within these walls. In 1674, Sephardic Portuguese Jews from Amsterdam and Brazil built the Curaçao synagogue. This building is the oldest surviving synagogue in the Americas.
As time passed, the city grew beyond its original boundaries. The name "Willemstad," meaning William Town, was first recorded in 1680. This name honors the Princes of Orange. In 1675, the town of Pietermaai was built outside the city walls. A gap was left between the city and Pietermaai to keep the cannons at Fort Amsterdam unobstructed. In 1707, the suburb of Otrobanda was founded. Otrobanda eventually became the cultural centre of the city. Its name comes from the Papiamentu word "otro banda," meaning "the opposite side."
Industrial changes shaped the city's modern landscape. Willemstad is a major seaport because of its deep water harbour. It is one of the largest oil handling ports in the Caribbean. In 1915, Royal Dutch Shell built a large oil refinery. At one time, this was the largest refinery in the world.
The management of the oil industry saw major shifts in the late 20th century. In 1985, Shell closed its refinery, which employed 12,000 people. The Government of Curaçao bought the refinery and its related companies for a symbolic price. They paid 1.00 guilder for each of the four companies, totaling 4 guilders. In 1986, the facility was leased to the Venezuelan company PDVSA. However, the refinery has faced challenges recently. In 2017, the United States Government hit PDVSA with punitive sanctions. This led to attempts to seize the refinery.
Willemstad also has a rich life in education, sports, and tourism. The University of Curaçao is the national university located in the city. The city is a popular destination for tourists who visit its casinos and beaches.
