The island is very small in land area. It has a population of about 2,158 people as of January 2025. This makes it the smallest territory in the Americas by population. The main towns are The Bottom, Windwardside, Zion's Hill, and St. Johns.

The island is shaped like a single large volcano.

Mount Scenery is the huge volcano in the center. It is a dormant volcano, which means it is not erupting right now. This peak is the highest point in the whole Kingdom of the Netherlands. The island has very steep cliffs that drop into the ocean. These cliffs are often 100 meters or taller. Because the land is so steep, there are no large mangrove swamps. Instead, there are eight small bays tucked into the rocky coast. One of these is Fort Bay, which is the island's only port.

People have lived on Saba for a very long time.

Evidence shows people lived there about 3,300 years ago. Early settlers likely came from South America using great sailing skills. Christopher Columbus saw the island in 1493, but he did not land. He thought the rocky shores were too dangerous. Later, Dutch families came to live there in the 1640s. For a long time, the island was known for sugar and fishing. In the late 1800s, women made famous Saba lace. This needlework was so important that men called it "The Island of Women."

Saba has many plants and animals that are found nowhere else.

These are called endemic species. Examples include the Saban anole lizard and the Saban black iguana. High up on the mountain, there is a misty cloud forest. This area is called the Elfin Forest Reserve. It looks mossy because of the clouds and mist. Many different types of orchids and ferns grow there. The island is also a great place for birds. It is home to the Sargasso Shearwater, which is the national bird. The cliffs are also a huge breeding area for the Red-billed tropicbird.

Life on the island changed a lot in the 1900s.

Before 1943, people moved around the island only by foot or by mule. Then, a man named Joseph Hassell designed a road. Residents built this road by hand, and it made travel much easier. An airport was built at Flat Point in 1963. A larger pier was added in 1972 to help with boats. These changes helped tourism grow into a major part of the economy. Today, visitors come to see the beautiful views and the unique nature of this small island.
