You can find the island near Guadeloupe and Martinique. Both of those neighbors are overseas departments of France. The capital city is Roseau, which sits on the western side of the land.

Many people call Dominica the "Nature Island of the Caribbean." This is because the island has a very special natural environment. It is actually the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles. Geothermal and volcanic activity is still helping to form the land today. This activity created the Boiling Lake, which is the second-largest hot spring in the world. The island is covered in lush, mountainous rainforests. While some coastal areas have dry shrubland, it rains heavily in the middle of the island.

The history of the island began long ago with indigenous people. The Arawak arrived from South America in the fifth century. Later, the Kalinago people lived on the island. The Kalinago had a special name for the land: Wai‘tu kubuli. This means "Tall is her body." Christopher Columbus sailed past the island on November 3, 1493. Because it was a Sunday, he named it Dominica. This name comes from a Latin word for Sunday.

Over time, different European countries controlled the island. The French had permanent settlements and coffee plantations from the 1690s. They brought enslaved people from West Africa to work the land. Later, Great Britain took control in 1763 after the Seven Years' War. The British made English the official language. Slavery was ended by the British in 1833. After many years of change, Dominica finally became an independent republic in 1978.

There are many unique things to see in Dominica today. The sisserou parrot, or imperial amazon, lives only on this island.
