Roseau is the most important place for trade on the island. Many goods come through its port. These include bananas, cocoa, oranges, and grapefruit. The city also has a large service sector to help the local economy.

The city sits on a flat area called an alluvial fan. This was formed hundreds of years ago by the Roseau River. Long ago, Amerindians lived here because of the nearby river. Later, French settlers arrived in the 16th and 17th centuries. They named the area after the river reeds, which are called "roseaux" in French.

Today, the city shows many different styles of building. You can see French colonial architecture and local styles. Some streets are crooked and spread out from the Old Market.

You can also see English influence in the large government buildings. The central district is very crowded with houses and concrete buildings. There is not much open green space in the center. However, the Botanical Gardens and Government House gardens provide beautiful green areas. These gardens are very special for the Caribbean region.

Roseau has a tropical monsoon climate. This means the temperature stays mostly the same all year. It rains often, with an average of about 114 inches every year.
