December is the driest month of the year. Even in the dry season, the temperature stays relatively consistent. July and August can be a little cooler than other months. This tropical climate helps the local environment thrive.

History shows that many different people have visited Douala. The Portuguese arrived in the area around 1472. At that time, they called the Wouri River estuary the Rio dos Camarões. This means "Shrimp River."

By 1650, immigrants from Congo had formed a town there. These people spoke the Duala language. Later, the city was part of a German protectorate from 1884 to 1895. In 1885, the city was renamed Douala. It served as a capital for a time until 1902.

The city has changed a lot over the years. After World War I, France began to administer the area. In 1960, Cameroon gained its independence. Douala became a major economic city during this time. The population has grown very quickly. In 1955, there were over 100,000 people. By 2005, the population reached 1.9 million. Today, the city and its surrounding area have about 4,346,000 people.

Douala is divided into seven main districts. These include Akwa, Bassa, Bonaberi, Bonapriso, Bonanjo, Deïdo, and New Bell.

Each district has its own special role. Akwa is the business district of the city. Bonanjo is the administrative district with many large offices and banks. Bonaberi sits on the other side of the Wouri River. It is mostly an industrial area.
