Douala is a vital hub for the entire CEMAC region. This economic zone includes Gabon, Congo, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, the Central African Republic, and Cameroon. Because of its location, the city manages many major exports. These include oil, cocoa, coffee, timber, metals, and fruits.

The city's economy relies heavily on its transport links. It was once home to Central Africa's largest port. While the Kribi port is now replacing that role, Douala remains central. The city also contains the major international airport for Cameroon.

History shows how different groups have shaped the area. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to visit around 1472. They called the Wouri River estuary the Rio dos Camarões, or Shrimp River. By 1650, immigrants from Congo had formed a town. These people spoke the Duala language. During the 18th century, the area was a center for the transatlantic slave trade. In 1884, the city became a German protectorate. It was known then as Kamerunstadt. In 1885, the city was renamed Douala. It served as the capital of the territory until 1902.

Political changes followed the end of World War I. In 1919, German territories became French and British protectorates. France received a mandate to administer Douala. The city served as the capital of Cameroon from 1940 to 1946. When Cameroon gained independence in 1960, it became a federal republic. The capital moved to Yaoundé, but Douala remained the economic center. The population has grown significantly over time. In 1955, the city had over 100,000 inhabitants. By 2005, the population reached 1.9 million. Today, the city and surrounding area have about 4,346,000 people.

Douala is organized into seven distinct districts. These are Akwa, Bassa, Bonabéri, Bonapriso, Bonanjo, Deïdo, and New Bell.

Each district serves a specific purpose for the city. Akwa is the primary business district. Bonanjo serves as the administrative district. It contains large companies, banks, and many tall buildings. Bonaberi sits on the right bank of the Wouri River. It is mainly an industrial area. The Bonaberi Bridge connects it to the rest of the city.

Urban development in Douala has been shaped by many plans. A German urban plan was created in 1896. It included a hospital, a police station, and port buildings. In 1959, the Plan Dorian was designed. This plan still influences how the city grows today. The city also has over 120 different neighborhoods. Many neighborhood names use the prefix "bona." This means "descendant of" in the local language. This naming system refers to the Duala lineage. For example, the Akwa district was historically divided into many sub-sections like Bonadibong and Bonamilengue.

Language and culture are also very important in Douala. Cameroon has nearly 250 different languages and dialects. The local indigenous language is Duala. French and English are the official languages of the country. However, Douala is primarily francophone. In 2014, 76.4% of residents over age 15 could speak and understand French. The city's architecture also tells a story of its past. You can see historical buildings like the Palace of the Kings Bell.
