Many different provinces sit near the city borders. These include Quảng Ninh to the north and Hưng Yên to the southwest. Haiphong is a major hub for moving goods by water.

The weather in this coastal area changes with the seasons. It has a humid subtropical climate. This means the summers are hot and very wet. Most of the rain falls between April and October. In fact, about 90% of the yearly rain happens then. The winters are warm and much drier. In January, the average high is around 20 degrees Celsius. During the hot months of June and July, highs reach about 32 degrees. Even the sea temperature changes with the seasons. It is coldest in February and warmest in July and August.

Haiphong has a long and busy history. A famous female general named Lê Chân lived there a long time ago. She served under the Trưng Sisters in 40 AD. Later, in the 19th century, the city had special administrative centers. The city also saw much struggle during the wars of the 20th century. French forces once shelled the city with ships like the cruiser Suffren. During the Vietnam War, US aircraft also flew over the area. The US Navy even placed mines in the harbor in 1972. Today, the city has recovered and is a strong industrial center.

Today, many people live and work in Haiphong. The population was about 4,664,124 in 2025.

The city is a huge center for making things. Factories produce many items like ships, motorbikes, and steel pipes. They also make food items like beer and fish sauce. Many people work in these industries. Others work in farming and fishing. About one third of the land is used for farming. Most of that land is used to grow rice.

Traveling in and out of Haiphong is quite easy. The city sits where two big highways meet. One road leads west toward the capital, Hanoi. Another road leads south to Nam Định. A new highway was finished in 2015 to connect the city to Hanoi. This new path makes the trip one hour faster. The port is also very busy with large ships. The harbor has three main docks named Hoang Dieu, Chua Ve, and Dinh Vu.
