Red River Delta

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Red River Delta is a special place in northern Vietnam. It is a wide and flat plain of low land. This area sits near the western coast of the Gulf of Tonkin. The Red River flows through this land to meet the Thái Bình River. The name 'Hồng' is a word for red or crimson. This name comes from the color of the river. The delta is a very important part of the country.

This region works like a giant, natural farm. Most of the land is used to grow rice. It is the second most important place for rice in Vietnam. Farmers often use double cropping to grow more food. This means they plant crops more than once a year. Many people also work in fisheries or aquaculture. Aquaculture is the way people farm living things in water.

History lives in this land too. Some experts believe this area was home to very old languages. They think people lived here about 4,000 to 4,500 years ago. The delta is often called the cradle of the Vietnamese nation. This is where water puppetry first began in the rice paddies. The region also saw hard times during the Vietnam War.

Many people live close together in this delta. It is the most crowded part of all Vietnam. The area includes the capital city, Hanoi, and the port of Haiphong. It also includes four provinces: Bắc Ninh, Hưng Yên, Ninh Bình, and Phú Thọ. In 2019, almost 23 million people lived here. By 2025, the population was expected to reach about 29 million.

Living here requires careful planning. A network of dikes helps protect the low land from floods. These dikes act like walls to keep water out. People also face seasonal storms and salt water coming in from the sea. The area is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This means people work to protect the natural living things there.
