The state is named after the Niger Delta. Much of that large area is inside the state. Delta State shares borders with many other places. To the north is Edo State. To the east are Anambra and Rivers states. Bayelsa State is to the south. Ondo State and the Bight of Benin are to the west. The coastline along the ocean is about 160 kilometres long.

The land here is mostly low and flat. You will not find any huge hills. Much of the state is covered in green forests. In the southwest, there are Central African mangroves. These are special plants that grow in salty water. The far south has Niger Delta swamp forests. Many rivers flow through this wet land. The Niger River flows along the eastern border. The Forçados River flows along the southern border. The Escravos River runs through the city of Warri.
