Osun State

geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Osun is a state located in southwestern Nigeria. It is named after the River Osun, which flows through the center of the land. The state is bordered by several other places. To the east, it meets Ekiti and Ondo states. To the north, it touches Kwara State. To the south, it sits next to Ogun State. To the west, it is bounded by Oyo State. The River Osun itself helps form part of the border with Oyo.

The land in Osun has two main looks. Most of the state is covered in lowland forests. The northern part is a bit drier and is called a savanna. This area is home to many living things. You might see a mona monkey or a purple heron. There are even African forest elephants and chimpanzees in the southern forests. These forests are very important but are also under threat. The state also has many rivers, like the Erinle and Oba rivers.

The history of this area is very old. Long ago, the land was split between different Yoruba states. Some were small towns, while others were part of the large Oyo Empire. Between 1877 and 1893, a conflict called the Kiriji War took place. Later, the area became part of a British protectorate. Eventually, the modern Osun State was created on 27 August 1991. It was formed from the southeast part of Oyo State. Its capital city is Osogbo.

Many interesting facts define the state today. Osun is the ninth smallest state in Nigeria by area. It has about 4.7 million people. Most people living there are Yoruba. They belong to groups like the Ife, Ijesha, and Oyo. The people grow many crops, such as cocoa, yam, and maize. They also find minerals like gold and granite in the ground. The state is known for having a very high literacy rate.

Osun is a place of great culture and learning. The ancient town of Ile-Ife is a very important center for Yoruba culture. It is also home to Obafemi Awolowo University. Every August, people travel from all over the world for the Osun-Osogbo festival. They visit the river to celebrate the goddess Osun. The Osun-Osogbo Grove is so special that it is a World Heritage Site. This means it is a treasure for the whole world.
