Lagos is a major center for money, trade, and learning. It has one of the largest economies in Africa. Its economy is worth about $84 billion. This makes it a very important part of the whole country.

Water is everywhere in Lagos State. Nearly one quarter of the land is actually water. This includes many rivers, creeks, and large lagoons. The Lagos and Lekki lagoons are the largest bodies of water in the interior.

The Ogun and Osun rivers also flow into these lagoons. Because there is so much water, people use boats to move goods. This makes the water a vital path for transportation. In the forests, you might see mona monkeys or forest elephants. In the ocean, you can find manatees and crocodiles.

Many different groups of people have lived in Lagos for a long time. The Yoruba people are the largest group living there. Other groups like the Ewe and Ogu live in the far west. Since the 1800s, many people have moved to Lagos from other places. Some people come from different parts of Nigeria, like the Igbo or Hausa. Others come from far away, like Brazil, China, or the United Kingdom. Because of this, the state has many different religions and cultures.

Lagos has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, the area was made of small fishing villages. These villages were sometimes controlled by the Benin or Oyo Empires. In the 1500s, the Portuguese arrived and gave the area the name Lagos. Later, the British became involved in the region. In 1850, the British navy attacked the kingdom.

By 1861, Lagos became a British colony. The state we know today was officially formed on 27 May 1967.

Today, Lagos is growing faster than almost any other urban area. The state capital is a city called Ikeja.

There are also many other busy towns like Epe and Badagry. Epe is famous for being a fishing capital with a huge seafood market. In the south, a new area called Eko Atlantic is being built on land taken from the ocean.
